How long does it take to cool a room? Square meters explained

Real cooling times by m², BTU, insulation and Medellín humidity — detailed why it varies.

There is no single magic number. Cooling time depends on heat load (sun, people, equipment), insulation, airflow and capacity (BTU/h). In Medellín, high humidity makes heat feel heavier even when outdoor temperatures are moderate.

Typical ranges (closed room, correctly sized unit)

  • 9–12 m² bedroom: 10–20 minutes for a 3–5 °C perceived drop
  • 15–25 m² studio / small office: 15–30 minutes
  • 30–45 m² living / shop: 25–45 minutes; longer with sun-facing glass
  • Open or poorly insulated spaces may never stabilize without zoning

Why it sometimes “doesn’t cool”

  • Undersized unit (too few BTU for real m²)
  • Dirty filters or blocked coil (low airflow)
  • Refrigerant leak or wrong charge
  • Open doors/windows or hot air infiltration
  • Outdoor unit without airflow or in full sun
